Brief #5: Surreal Poster
The World Food Programme:
Founded in 1961, The World Food Programme is the food-assistance branch of the United Nations and the largest humanitarian organization focused on hunger and food security. The mission of this organization is to build a pathway to peace, stability and prosperity for people recovering from conflict, disasters and the impact of climate change. In addition to distributing meals at a large scale, The World Food Programme works on advocacy and policy with governments, NGOs, and academic institutions.
Idea Behind the Image:
This image shows the severity and wide spread of hunger as communicated by the map in the shape of a loaf of bread and held by multiple hands from different directions. In addition, it offers a stark contrast to images in which colonizers where the ones to divide these countries and continents to take over them, therefore, it is no coincidence that the areas suffering from hunger the most are those previously colonized. The image, then, draws a parallel between these two concepts and depicts hunger as a crime committed by the wealthy.
